Useful Cruise Information

Hello!  Over on my other blog, I've put up 3 articles that are must-reads: #1.   "Top 10 Classic Cruises" #2.  "Cruises You Should Know About in 2010" #3.  "And Now for Something Completely Different" I have researched and highlighted some classic favorites, as well as some of the more unusual offerings of the year. Some of them include price quotes, but always remember to ask me about: * Past passenger rates * Senior rates * Military rates * Police and Fire personnel rates * Air-included specials * Group rates (block-space) and included amenities * Earl...Read More...

Frank Rich explains it very well...

In my sales career, I’ve a met a lot of men whose success depends on quarantining anything like a conscience from their careers. (Much like politicians.) And this has always been one of the reasons I never really fit into the top-level sales culture: I would bring up what I felt were relevant moral questions, and no one wanted to hear it. Oh well. Far too many businesses operate without a moral compass, and it always perplexed me. This is still America, you don’t have to lie and cheat to get ahead. The thing that makes you lie and cheat is often just sheer greed. I have worke...Read More...

Easy Holiday Fudge Recipes

Christmas would be horribly boring without homemade treats -- so here are some of my favorites (and the fact that I can make them tells you how easy they are): Foolproof Fudge: 3 cups of semisweet chocolate chips -- 1 and-a-half 12-ounce bags.  You might as well buy 2 bags and double this recipe! 1 can (14 ounce) sweetened condensed milk.  Go ahead and get 2 cans if you are going to double this. Dash salt (or 2) 1 cup walnuts, optional 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract Line square or oblong pan with foil (extend foil over the edges). In large microwave-safe bowl, place choco...Read More...

Oasis of the Seas Review, Part 2

OK -- so we've boarded the Oasis of the Seas and got settled into our balcony stateroom -- now it's time to explore! We started with a tour of some of the fancy staterooms, such as a Royal Loft Suite, Crown Loft Suite, Aqua Theater Suite, and Royal Family Suite.  Then we viewed a Boardwalk View Stateroom with Balcony, a Central Park View Stateroom, and Family Interior Stateroom.  I tell you, there is a room for every situation and budget -- if you have more than 2 children, you are not left out.  If you are splurging on a special occasion, you can sail in...Read More...

Oasis Review -- Royal Caribbean rep Nicole DeCubas-Castillo

As you know, I have been on the Oasis of the Seas for our National Sales meeting as well as for industry events for the past 10 days. The reviews are coming in from all the hosted media/press and travel partners we had onboard and the comments are nothing less than spectacular ! This ship is one of a kind. It IS the premium/premier cruise ship in the market today. No other cruise ship comes close. The Oasis of the Seas does command a higher price point-and your talk track to your customers comparing prices is "there is no other cruise ship like it and there fore commands a higher pri...Read More...

Oasis of the Seas Review, Part One

Hello!  Thanks for your interest in the Oasis of the Seas -- as part of the Cruise Planners convention, Brandon and I had a chance to spend 2 days onboard, and I'm reporting back as promised.  First, allow me a few quick disclaimers: 1.  We were only onboard one full day and parts of two other days so we were not able to experience every dining or entertainment venue, and all of our meals and drinks were included. 2.  We didn't actually go anywhere (most of the time we could see Ft. Lauderdale and Miami on the horizon). 3.  We had to take our luggage ...Read More...

We're back from convention...

The Cruise Planners convention in Ft. Lauderdale was excellent, and Brandon and I particularly enjoyed our 2-night stay aboard the magnificent Oasis of the Seas.  I should be able to post pix in a couple of days. I think I'll break the review up into sections -- even though we were only there parts of 3 days, the ship is just too big and there are too many things going on to put it all into one blog post. Then, we'll host our "Oasis Night" with Royal Caribbean rep Nicole DeCubas-Castillo on December 15th -- it's a Tuesday night "after work open house" here at the office.  Nicole...Read More...

We're Heading to Convention!

Brandon and I can't wait to report back on all the fantastic features of the Oasis of the Seas! Here are some of the things people want to know about: How easy/hard is it to get 5400 people on and off the ship? What are the rooms like (especially the balconies)? What is the "zip-line" like (scary?)? Is there wireless in the rooms and how's the internet speed? Take photos of cute cupcakes! Take photos of everything! What caliber of headliner entertainment do they have? What are the water shows and ice shows like? Send me a note at jmclaren@cruiseplanners.com if you have a last-minu...Read More...

SuperClubs Makes it Even More Super!

Just got off a webinar about some new improvements at SuperClubs Resorts and Spas and I have great information to pass along.  Some people have been concerned about the recently-announced rebranding of the Grand Lido properties in Jamaica to the Breezes brand -- but no worries!  Aside from the name change and dropping the complimentary manicures and laundry service (still available at a charge) everything about these fabulous resorts stays the same.  The Negril property is now called "Breezes Grand Resort & Spa Negril," and the old Grand Lido Braco is now called "...Read More...

Top New Alaska Cruises for 2010

One of the top stories for 2010 is that Carnival is moving the Spirit to Seattle!  Her beautiful Inside Passage cruise is well-suited for families, starting with an easy and budget-friendly Seattle flight.  You get a nice overview of what Alaska is like, with glacier-viewing, fun and historic ports-of-call, opportunities for wildlife viewing, and an special evening visit to Victoria, British Colombia. Another change I like is the new itinerary of Royal Caribbean's Rhapsody of the Seas, also sailing the Inside Passage from Seattle.  You get longer stays in the ports...Read More...

Top 10 Ways to Save Money on a Cruise

1.  Photographs.  Take your own camera and get table-mates to take photos at dinner.  If there are locals in costumes, musicians and such at the dock, give them a tip and take photos with them yourself.  Ask a new friend to take yours, and you offer to take theirs. 2.  Spa treatments.  Set your appointments for the days your ship is in port, and you could save as much as half. 3.  Don't eat out in port.  If you can combine breakfast and lunch, or return to your ship for lunch, you'll not only save money, but probably have a better meal anyway. ...Read More...

Report on Canada-New England cruise aboard the Caribbean Princess

For a first-time visit to New York, I think I did it just about perfectly.  1.  I chose a hotel in a Times Square location (the Hilton Garden Inn at 48th Street and 8th Avenue).  It was perfect for getting information from the Gray Line office across the street and picking up the tour buses nearby.  It was very close to the restaurant we chose for a special meal, Le Bernadin, and to the Shubert Theater where we saw the musical Memphis.  “Restaurant Row” is just a couple of streets over, and the heart of Times Square a couple of blocks the other way. 2....Read More...

My Famous and Fabulous Meatball Recipe

Howdy!  Sorry I kept forgetting to post this after promising to write it out.  Now, please keep in mind that I don't actually use measurements when I make meatballs, so the second time you make them you may want to do some tweaking  according to your own tastes.  But here goes: Make the sauce in a crock pot first, so that when the meatballs come out of the oven they will go directly into hot sauce. Put in 2 16-ounce cans of tomato sauce, one 8-ounce can of tomato paste, and set the consistency you want by how much water you add in using the paste ca...Read More...

Haven't written in a while!

I've been back from Boston for a week, but have been extremely busy!  That's a good thing, though -- attending networking events, preparing for the Open House next Saturday, and helping people get their Christmas and Spring Break cruises booked. I came home absolutely eaten alive by mosquitoes, and a week later I can't get the torture to stop!  Cortisone creams aren't working, a hot bath didn't help -- I don't know what to do about it.  Some of the welts are extremely inflamed and the itching is terrible.  I was hoping to be healed up by the time we go on our Canada-New...Read More...

I'll be tagging along with my husband on a business trip to Boston, plus meeting up with some friends who live near there.   I hope to cover a lot of turf in 5 days: * The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum * Legal Sea Foods Restaurant * The Freedom Trail * Beacon Hill * The Public Garden and Boston Common * Cambridge, Harvard, and MIT * The waterfront * Trolley tour * Irish pubs * The sail-away of the ...Read More...

Travel Insurance and Hurricanes

I'd like to offer a Q & A forum here -- the latest hurricanes and tropical storms have more people asking about the necessity of travel insurance and exactly what is covered. I use an independent (not associated with any cruise line or travel provider) that is affiliated with American Express, as is Cruise Planners.  They do provide coverage, but under specific conditions.  You can't just decide you don't want to go, and you can't buy it and be protected after it is determined that a hurricane is headed toward your destination. * The policy covers "Home Uninhabitable,&q...Read More...

Almost two-thirds (63 percent) of US adults expect to take at least one trip for leisure purposes between August 2009 and January, 2010, up from 61 percent who expressed the same intention in July 2008. 2009 Alaska Report, 2010 Preview

Although I still have a few clients on Alaska voyages yet this summer, I wanted to go ahead and present some of the impressions and feedback so far from this year's Alaska cruisers as we prepare to introduce the 2010 season! I had a nice mix of cruise lines that people selected -- NCL, Celebrity, Princess, and Holland America.  In most cases, we (the client and I working together to decide on the best cruise) didn't feel that Royal Caribbean or Carnival offered the best itineraries this year.  In cases where the itinerary wasn't the deciding factor, then it came down to...Read More...

Travel Myths to Debunk

I loved the "Travel Myths" article on MSN's front page -- click here -- and at the end the author challenges us readers to debunk our own myths, so here goes: 1.  Trains in Europe are cheaper than flights -- I agree with Eric and almost always advise my clients to fly between cities that are any distance at all. 2.  It's cheaper on the internet.  Well, the introductory offer that caught your eye might be cheap, but the dates YOU want, and the resort where YOU want to stay, and the air flights YOU need will have the same prices no matter how you purchase ...Read More...

Always thinking about the next trip...

Hello! Back from Seattle-land and the record-breaking heat wave!  Spent as much time down by the water as possible.  On the hottest day, I went with my son and his family down to the Oregon coast just west of Portland. The kids splashed around in the water and made sand "castles" for a couple of hours while we cooled off.  The beach was actually foggy -- you could literally see the clash of cold air off the water with hot air over the land. In Seattle, I got to see the new cruise terminal -- looks like it will be easty to park and shuttle over, or grab a taxi to g...Read More...

Alaska, Europe 2010 Preview

Attention cruisers -- now is the time to start looking ahead to 2010 Alaska and Europe cruises!  Even air is available to book now for trips up to 330 days out. Speaking of air, fares appear to be holding steady, so looking at some of the early "2 for 1 plus air" deals is worthwhile.  Oceania in particular is off to a strong start with aggressive pricing designed to fill up their ships fast.  Every year, people end up disappointed because they wait too long to act -- right now, you can have confidence that booking an Oceania cruise early is the smart way to go.&nbs...Read More...

Destination of the Week

Because Fall is so fabulous there, and bargains abound if you go off-season -- I've chosen Paris!  I'm thinking of a package as the best way to combine air, hotel, and tours and get the best values on all 3. In Paris, your hotel is all about the location, location, location -- if you don't do it right you'll spend all of your time and money just getting to where the action is.  Taxis are very expensive in Paris, so why not spend a bit more up-front and be right where you want to be? As in every big city, hotels tend to get cheaper the further out you go, but that doesn't mean th...Read More...

Great "Get Away From the Heat" Suggestion

I had asked people to send me their "get away from the heat" fantasy vacations, and one person kindly obliged with a great idea -- it's not a wild fantasy but it's easy and practical -- a trip to New England! She lives in Connecticut so this idea was a no-brainer to her, and she says it's absolutely beautiful up there right now.  Of course, I have a Canada-New England cruise planned for the end of September, so I agree with her advice! Land Package Client Review

Everyone's looking for the best deals at the hottest destinations, and I just got the latest scoop on one of them from a newly-returned, very satisfied client: She got a great vacation package from American Express Vacations, and first of all she was impressed with the document case that she received.  So many companies now are going "paperless" (which just means that the customer has to use his or her own ink and paper) it was refreshing to get a lovely case with compartments for organizing all her vouchers, passports, itinerary, a pen, and such.  It also cam...Read More...

C'mon, you know me -- I'm not trying to "sell" you something  -- this is the real deal, and it's not too late to capture an amazing cruise deal. My recommendation is a 7-night Inside Passage cruise round-trip from Seattle:  the airfare is reasonable, you pick up 2 hours of time flying West so you don't have to fly in a day ahead; you get to see glaciers, all the classic Alaskan ports-of-call; and you get an amazing, magical evening in Victoria! Rare Morning Blog

I woke up early today, which was very odd because usually I can't sleep during the night and then I can't get up in the morning.  But today it's a beautiful, quiet morning and the back yard is full of birds!  I don't know what they're chowing down on out there, but it must be quite the birdie feast -- I counted 6 bluejays, 2 cardinals, and 2 finches.  I can hear the doves, but I don't see them. Top Honeymoons of 2009

After the stresses of wedding planning and the excitement of the big day, the top choice for this year’s honeymoon get-away is, unsurprisingly, a romantic, relaxing cruise!  Especially appealing to Texas couples are the easy, budget-friendly Carnival cruises that sail year-round from Galveston.  Most popular is the Carnival Conquest, setting sail every Sunday to ports-of-call in tropical Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel.  Surrounding the days in port, where couples can share romantic adventures or down-time on sugary beaches, are leisurely days onboard with an enormou...Read More...

Preparing for a Great Cruise

I might as well start my "travel diary" right now as I involve myself in one of the most important preparations -- deciding what to wear! My Carnival Splendor cruise, being a "cool-weather" cruise (as opposed to going to the Caribbean), will require a bit different kind of packing.  Can't just hang out in shorts and swimwear when the temperature's in the 70s.  We'll have 3 days on the ship, then a day each in Astoria, Vancouver, and Victoria; and that's after spending 2 days at my sister's house in Kansas City -- a total of 10 days.  Also, there will be 2...Read More...

Rum Libations for Pirates

Before desperate, destitute Somalis decided that hijacking cargo boats was the best way to solve their financial problems, REAL PIRATES had a notorious, yet romantic lore in our culture.  I was thinking of hosting a Caribbean Night in honor of "Talk Like a Pirate Day" in September, but now I'm wondering if the fun has been spoiled by real-life, not-so-fun recent events in Somalia. Let me know what you think -- a party with a pirate theme, or something else (I'll be happy to accept suggestions).   Meanwhile, here are some Rum Libation recipes that I am going to offe...Read More...

Do I Detect a Theme?

When I was checking up on the Shore Trips favorite excursions, it occurred to me how many of them include wildlife encounters.  I think we crave interaction with nature because it is so rare in our lives -- and so thrilling and exotic when it happens! I know some of the coolest things I've ever done involved animal-watching:  whale-spotting in Hawaii, Alaska, and Mexico; bear-watching in Ketchikan, Alaska; swimming with stingrays in Grand Cayman; snorkeling in Belize and the Bahamas; touching and kissing a dolphin in Cozumel; and coming upon deer, marmots, mountain goats, be...Read More...

Recipes, destination of the week, and other miscellaneous notions

Hello!  Hope you've been having a great weekend!  Steve and I kicked it off with a get-together with some friends -- we met at the Southwest Gallery (over at Welch and Sigma) for an artists' reception, and then we had dinner at the Asia Grill (over by the Plano Central Market).  We LOVE this place because the food is fantastic and they let you bring your own wine -- so we took a lovely, smooth Lambert Bridge Viognier, and Tom and Deb brought a big, fruity Australian Shiraz and we had a wonderful time! Since we aren't going to make it to Santa Fe this year, we decided a gall...Read More...

Rave Reviews!

Thought you might want to know what people are saying about their cruises when they get back: Jan and Jim loved their 10-night Panama Canal cruise aboard the elegant Holland American Zuiderdam.  The food and service were impeccable, and what can you say about enjoying the view from the balcony of your 562-square foot suite?  The canal itself is "just a wonder," says Jim.  Although they have cruised a lot, cruising the canal was a dream fulfilled, and to go in such style made it extra-special. Terry and Mark had nothing but praise for the Royal Caribbean Marin...Read More...
