Nice Article on Mexico City
The Dallas Morning News Sunday Travel section featured an excellent article about Mexico City, specifically about how to get an outstanding personal tour of her best attractions. Having been there several times, I can say that Mexico City is so much nicer and has so much more to offer than you might think.
Even armed only with a guide book, a map, and a taxi, you can easily get to all the city's wonders and have a great time. You'll just want to stay in one of the top hotels and not venture off the beaten path too much on your own. The history, beauty, and grand scale of her best features make the trip worthwhile.
Some of you know that I try to avoid making you go through the Mexico City airport if at all possible, but if that is the destination, then grab a taxi and head straight to your hotel. American Airlines and Mexicana offer non-stop flights several times a day, so getting there is easy and usually not too expensive.
Must see places:
1. The Palacio de las Bellas Artes. This Art-Deco masterpiece is a treasure and a marvel worth seeing even if it were empty!
2. The Museum of Anthropology. The dramatic stories of Mexico's historical ages come to life.
3. The Floating Gardens of Xochimilco. Not only interesting, but a lot of fun to float about for a while, relaxing with a cold Modelo and being serenaded by Mariachis!
4. The Tourists' Mercado. The booths of Mexican handicrafts seem to go on forever -- here you will find huaraches, peasant blouses, carved onyx trinkets and chess sets, belts and leather goods of every kind, Talavera Tile, silver jewelry, and so much more.
Well, there's a lot more -- we could talk about heading out to the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan, a day trip to Acapulco, the Catedral, restaurants, and on and on -- a good guide book is really what we need to plan a great trip and map out how to get the most from a Mexico City get-away. Organized tours are a good way to go, too, for a longer vacation. I also recommend a package through American Express Vacations -- you'll get a better price and have one company in charge of all your reservations. Call or come by and let's talk! I think you would find the history, culture, and people as fascinating and delightful as I do.
