Bahamas Ports-of-Call
Hello! Have been very busy this week so I'm struggling to finish my vacation report, and I still don't have my pictures processed! Well, I'll catch up this weekend, so please check back on Monday.
Anyway, to continue: this post will be about the Bahamas ports of Freeport/Lucaya, and Nassau.
They call it "Freeport/Lucaya" (on Grand Bahama Island) because Freeport by itself is just a ship port -- there is very little there. You can walk off the ship to a little market of local crafters, but you'll really want to take an excursion here. You can taxi down to Lucaya or the International Bazaar for shopping, but the real action is in the water or at the fabulous beaches!
Book yourself a "Beach Break," or get out and go snorkeling, kayaking, or swimming with dolphins! There's plenty of time for browsing in Lucaya, too -- buy your conch shells and straw hats here!
Steve and I taxied to the town and walked around. It's pretty and picture-worthy. We even walked over to see the Sheraton and Westin resorts -- that's how we know the beaches are so gorgeous! These are really beautiful places, by the way, if you would ever like to just fly in and stay there a few days. The Westin is especially classy.
Nassau, on the other hand, is a big town with plenty of upscale shopping and excitement! Steve and I went snorkeling here, but I would probably advise you to do it the other way around -- take an excursion from Freeport, and do your city-walking and shopping here. You can walk right off the ship and be in the heart of it all!
Other people said they took an excursion to Atlantis and really loved the resort and the impressive aquarium there. Honestly -- there is so much to do and see from this little island that you immediately see why people go there over and over again.
Your ship will most likely be docked there for a long enough time to do 2 things, and you can return to the ship for lunch (since you've already paid for it) in between.
You lucky cruisers who will be sailing the new Conquest itinerary out of Galveston will absolutely flip over these ports-of-call! Good thing there are some sea days to relax, too.
Well, pictures are coming soon! Thanks and talk soon -- Janet
